A Team of Warriors

Waterloo Cheerleading is a co-ed team of athletes who perform acrobatic stunts, who tumble, and who toss or get tossed high into the air. These skills require a significant learning period (months or years), so we attempt to recruit athletes to our team in their first year so that they can reach their highest potential. Information about what kind of athletes we look for is covered in the Tryouts section.

We are not a dance team, or a spirit squad, but we do try our best to support our university, and our athletic teams, as every student should. We attend home football and basketball games, where our role is both to entertain with the acrobatics we do when play is halted, and to keep the crowd LOUD.

Our primary focus however is National Competition. We do much harder skills, and pile them back to back to back for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This is why we train and practice. The competitive nature in our program has drawn many high level athletes over the years, including national level gymnasts, trampolinists, and many other athletes of varying background. Of course there is also a spot in our program for women who may or may not consider themselves "athletic" but are innately flexible and small, and for men who may not play many sports, but are strong nonetheless.

The nature of cheerleading is that there is many roles on a team. There is a spot for the showoff, the bodybuilder, the gymnast, the backyard tumbler or ninja, the strongman, the epic, the intense... the shy people even find a niche. But probably the best part of cheerleading is learning new skills, things you may not have believed you could do.

Interested..?

You may have seen the team perform somewhere, seen team members in the gym or you may have heard about the team through a friend.

No matter how you got here, there are 3 things you should do:

  1. Learn about our team. Watch the videos, read the Recruit Info and Tryouts sections that apply to you. You have probably only seen a small facet of our team, you may discover other things about our team that could interest you even more.
  2. Get in contact with us. Try joining our Facebook Group. There you can talk to current athletes and coaches in an informal way, on the wall, and ask questions and meet other possible recruits. You can also email the head coach if you still have questions after reading the webpage.
  3. Try it. This is by far the most important thing you can do. The acrobatics we do are meant to look difficult for most, but easy for us... and this can scare off potential recruits. There are things that almost anyone can do on their first day. Once you can see yourself doing the easy things, it becomes much easier to imagine doing the harder things.
